I'm Charles Carreon, Lawyer to the Visionary Psychedelic Community

If you have questions about your spiritual use of psychedelics, let’s get together and discuss your situation

  • Advising visionary churches that use psychedelics as religious sacraments is my only professional activity.
  • I serve as General Counsel to the North American Association of Visionary Churches (NAAVC).
  • As General Counsel for NAAVC, I teach NAAVC members why religious use of psychedelics — Ayahuasca, psilocybin, mescaline, 5-MEO-DMT, and other traditional entheogens — is protected under the First Amendment and is not a crime.
  • I have represented dozens of Controlled Substance Act defendants in federal prosecutions as a Federal Public Defender (Oregon CJA Panel).
  • My psychedelic experience began as a young student in the sixties.  I immediately concluded that pursuing spiritual growth through psychedelics should not be unlawful, and conceived the desire to make access to psychedelics something that everyone could have, without becoming a felon.
  • For the last eight years, I have represented visionary churches that use psychedelic sacraments.
  • During the last five years, I have litigated RFRA actions in federal court, at all levels — trial and appeal.
  • I conduct risk assessments of visionary churches to determine how to make their practice safe from government intrusion.
  • When an investigation threatens, I shield Retained Clients from direct contact with law enforcement, preventing them from making potentially incriminating statements, proactively putting police and prosecutors on notice of the First Amendment protections for psychedelic practice, thus aborting potential prosecutions.
  • In a crisis, after a seizure of medicine, mobile phone, or laptop, I communicate effectively with government lawyers, DHS agents, and law enforcement to recover seized items and prevent the problem from expanding.
  • All client communications are confidential, and due to my long experience in the field, a short consultation should be sufficient to address your primary concerns and establish whether a establishing a retainer-based client relationship is warranted.
  • I’m a graduate of UCLA Law (1986), a John Olin Fellow in Law & Economics, a member of the California State Bar since 1987, an alumnus of two of the world’s largest law-firms (Morgan Lewis and Ropes & Gray), a former Oregon state prosecutor, and Oregon Federal Public Defender.
  • I have conducted over fifty criminal jury trials, many civil trials, and achieved hundreds of successful settlements with private parties and government agencies.  I currently focus entirely on representing groups and individuals who use psychedelics for religious purposes.
