The RL.com Case
In 2008 Charles successfully concluded the RL.com case. CRS Recovery, Inc. and Dale Mayberry v. John Laxton, Case No. 06-07093, Northern District of California.
The case began when Dale Mayberry the original owner of RL.Com lost control of the domain to a hijacker on December 23, 2003. Beijing-based hijacker Li Qiang hijacked RL.Com in a three-step process, first gaining control of the Administrative Contact email by hijacking the underlying MAT.Net domain, second, changing his own email address to Dale Mayberry’s, and third, initiating and approving the transfer to himself.
The domain was then purchased by domainer John Laxton of Santa Rosa, California, who was surprised when he was sued by Carreon’s client Richard Lau, President of CRS Recovery, Inc., a company formed to recover stolen domains. On September 26, 2008, Judge Claudia Wilken granted summary judgment in favor of the plaintiffs and awarded CRS the domain name, and on December 9, 2008 denied the defendants’ request for a stay pending appeal.
