Domain Names Are Property: For Real!
Internet domains are the newest form of legally recognized personal property in the State of California, and increasingly in other states, since the nation’s courts tend to follow California’s lead, especially in areas involving the Internet and media law.
Of course you can own a domain, but do you want to? What would you do with one if you owned one? The methods of using and exploiting domains for profit are as diverse as the imaginations of the people who own them. There are the purely creative rewards of controlling your own piece of the cyber-universe. If you do business online, a domain can be used to host your own email, which makes you seem more like the master of your business tools.
One thing is certain, there are an awful lot of domain name owners out there, and their numbers keep growing steadily. Once you become one of them, be sure and learn about the security features of your registration account. Most domain owners like to keep their domains “locked” for the added security against unauthorized transfers, that unfortunately still routinely occur. Yes, there are domain thieves hard at work right now stealing someone’s prized domains. Be sure you keep your registration information current in the registrar database, with a current email address. And remember that your domain is only as secure as the email address you use as your registration contact email. Most domain thefts happen when the controlling email account is somehow compromised.
