Online Media Law, PLLC

Online Media Law, PLLC (“OML”) was organized as an Oregon limited liability company in 2001 when I transitioned my practice from criminal defense to intellectual property.  In order to prepare myself for this transition, I engaged in a year-long research project, and wrote my book, Charles’ Primer of Online Media Law.  The Primer is a good place to get a quick grasp of the issues that Internet businesses may encounter as they venture into the realm of online commerce.  OML clients include software providers, webmasters, financial transaction processors, media companies, photographers, video creators, virtual reality animators, a major VOIP provider, and a wide range of other Internet business-people.  OML provides legal representation in all manner of intellectual property transactions, disputes, and negotiations, including mergers and acquisitions, software licensing, contract drafting, trademark and copyright registrations, litigation, and UDRP proceedings.

Law Office of Charles Carreon

I started my solo practice in 1995 in Ashland, Oregon on the second floor of 208 Oak Street, the Old Ashland Armory.  The owner, Lance Pugh, was an Internet early-adopter whose vision exceeded his means, and wired the entire building with fiber-optic cable in anticipation of the City of Ashland’s own creation of the Ashland Fiber Net, one of the first municipally-owned Internet Service Providers.  After opening my office, I became a member of the Criminal Justice Act Panel of the Oregon Federal Public Defender, which gave me an opportunity to appear before Federal District Court judges throughout the State of Oregon.  Additionally, I represented a wide variety of clients in civil matters, including real estate fraud, personal injury, unfair competition, and false advertising.

Mazursky, Schwartz & Angelo

During 1990-1993, I was a litigation associate at the plaintiff-side powerhouse lawfirm founded by superstar lawyers Chuck Mazursky, Arnie Schwartz and Chris Angelo.  From Chuck, I learned the power of storytelling, charisma, and unimpeachable honesty.  From Arnie, I learned the importance of preparation, brevity, and unwavering commitment to the client’s cause.  From Chris, I learned that the key to success is anticipating and negating every eventuality that could lead to the destruction of your case.  The three years during which I had the privilege of working with these remarkable gentlemen of the bar were the most formative of my career, and to them I owe my ability to make my way as an independent advocate.

Reboul, MacMurray, Hewitt, Maynard & Kristol

During 1989 and 1990, I was a litigation associate at the Los Angeles office of RMHM&K, that has since been merged into the firm of Ropes & Gray.  The LA office of RMHM&K did two types of work — trademark enforcement for Louis Vuitton and product liability defense for Mitsubishi Motors.  I worked there for a year, and candidly did not find it a perfect fit with my talents.  While I was at first pleased to advocate for the world’s largest maker of luxury goods, and to defend one of the world’s largest auto manufacturers against personal injury claims, I aspired to put my talents to work for real, flesh-and-blood people.   Thus, it was with pleasure that I took my acquired learning and experience to the next firm on my resume, Mazursky, Schwartz & Angelo.

Morgan, Lewis & Bockius

My first job out of law school was in the LA office of ML&B, a Philadelphia firm that was then, and continues to be, one of the top ten largest lawfirms in the world.  I did securities and general commercial litigation.  I was hired thanks to Mike Klowden, Steve Lowry, Vickie Bonnebaker, and other fine lawyers who helped me to transition from my comfortable situation at UCLA Law into the realities of LA litigation.  I also must remember Allen Neely, a superb trial lawyer whose kind endorsement of my talents in those early days gave me the confidence to keep writing, keep arguing, and just plain keep going!
