Copyright Alert — Creatives and Coders Have Rights!
If you are an author, artist, musician, or software coder creating original works, you need to understand the importance of copyrights. The US Copyright Office is an arm of the Library of Congress. Every work that is registered with the Copyright Office becomes a volume in the Library of Congress. That's enough reason to pony up the $45 they now charge to register a book or other creative work. But most people like the powerful legal remedies the copyright laws provide for those whose registered works are infringed.
It's true that every author of a creative work has the exclusive right to publish, perform, or exhibit their work; however, it's only those wise enough to register those works with the Copyright Office who will be able to avail themselves of the powerful federal court remedies provided by statute. Disney would not have become Disney without registering its copyrights, nor would famous artists like the Beatles, The Rolling Stones, David Bowie, etcetera, have been able to create catalogs of music that yearly produce millions in revenue. While file sharing and open source are very important developments, rumors of the death of copyright have been greatly exaggerated.
